Excellent piece Peter. This place's signage makes me think Hacienda/Acid House, were they any less welcoming?

Different kinds of bouncer, Phil! Not as menacing in a physical sense but / in keeping with the place/ a cultured menace that was much more off putting

Fair enough but in the early days of the Blackburn Raves (for accurate dates see https://www.wearedorothy.com/products/blackburn-love-blueprint-special-edition-for-rough-trade-books there were no bouncers at all. Is a MOOC/COOC the nearest H.E. has ever come to being "bouncerless"?

I remember going to Sett End (Red Parrot?) and Monroes in convoys from Manchester early days ‘88 - the dudes in those clubs had no idea what’d hit em - good fun and my first ever visit to east lançs
